April showers bring May…….quickly please???

Soren retrieving his ball

Soren retrieving his ball

The whirlwind of life never seems to stop, and between teaching  and running the Dog Corps. program at the Family Foundation School, working at the veterinary hospital, and training clients as my 3 jobs not to mention training my 7 dogs in Therapy work, Search and Rescue, IPO, and now movie acting. Plus running Life Long Tails Rescue and keeping up with the ever changing cycle of dogs and small animals in and out of foster its a wonder i remember to breath!

But there is no rest for the weary

April and May bring us the following

Emeline- At the end of the month Eme will take her IPWDA trailing test to certify as a Internationale police working dog association trailing K9. Eme has already proved herself running a few successful trails of run away students at the school i teach dog training at.

Raina- Is in the process of learning her role as a seeing eye/assistant dog for an upcoming film shooting next month. This is Raina’s first movie and she needs to learn 20 extra commands in addition to her basic obedience. Look for plenty of details and blog posts on this amazing opportunity for Raina and I, and of course the release of the movie in 2014.

Sören-  Has his first confirmation show for the SV coming up this summer as well as his AD which is a 12 mile endurance test. This is the start to his IPO work and we are laying the foundation now!

Abby- This old girl is maintaining her SAR and therapy work and in training for an article certification that will prove to help at searches and at home when you lose your keys playing soccer with the kids 😉

Fugly- With the successful completion of his CGC this boy is on his way to therapy certification. We are continuing his training and he works almost daily with the kids at the school accomplaning them to classes and therapy sessions and spending down time in the dorms.

Anna- Also completed her CGC and will be moving on to her therapy test. Anna is usually found at home keeping things running smooth but she loves to come down and visit with the kids and hang out with them.

Kaze- The newest addition to the copilot pack is a vivacious 10 month old silky terrier named kamikaze. This girl has a bright future as we are getting her basic training in place and developing her hunt drive and her reward system. Watch for what cool events this girl will be in next!

So as our crazy spring ensues please bear with us. If you need help we are currently accepting a limited number of new clients in the Sullivan, Delaware, and Broome county area. Please visit our site as it gets updated. http://www.EIK9T.com

Wait what is it really that you want me to do mom????

Sören has a dual job, one that fits him just as good as his IPO work. This boy is like a finely tuned machine………..all oiled and greased (requiring of course weekly bathes)  and ready to the job i decide needs to be done that day. The genetics of this fine young stud (or so he thinks as Raina stares adoringly at him in his crate for an unbeknownst reason to him) allow him to excel in whatever venue i see fit, now THAT folks is the total German Shepherd Dog. When he’s off hes off, and when hes on, holy shit you better watch out because HE IS ON!

Ready to work on command

Ready to work on command

“The man who rears a dog must complete what the breeder began.”

~Captain Max von Stephanitz

Not only good words about dogs in general but amazing words coming from the father of German Shepherd dogs themselves. I know all my dogs have a little of me in them, if they had been owned or handled by someone else their genetics mixed with that handler would have altered them in development in some way different then with me. This can be good and it can be bad, and i have seen both with my dogs. Spend an hour with my 4 shepherds and you can conclude one major trait that i poses, i’m a workaholic as are they.

So for Sören it’s really no big deal to put on the search vest and “GO SEARCH” when commanded, or put on his agitation harness and work on his bite and protection work, or watch me grab the treat pouch and get ready to do some obedience, or even hit the scent pad and do a little tracking. This boy is ready and waiting, literally for my every command, and he will preform with gusto!

Never fear a dull weekend is not near!

The eyes that melt my heart

The summer always seems to bring about a busy time, between dog training, kid training, searches (which we have had keep us busy this last week or so) and the ever necessary paperwork that surrounds it all (which i am currently drowning in) a relaxing weekend is just not in the cards.

This past weekend was no different. Saturday the plans were to load up the dogs and finish out a search that we had attended last week in Rockaway NJ. It was called off after the subject was located on friday. Raina’s alerts had proven to be correct in our area that we searched thursday, he was found outside our search area but within half a mile attributing to her long distant scent alerts during a lot of her work.

Then the plans changed back to attending the schools annual house picnic at the local park. It would have allowed all the dogs to spend time with their favorite students and meet their parents too! But alas that was not in the cards either and our final destination put us south of Albany NY searching for a missing man. The girls worked their areas and we were home by 11:30pm.

DAY ONE COMPLETE!!

It was destined to be a busy but non emergency day sunday, and the focus was getting the puppies out into new situations to continue desensitization and socialization.  That involved swimming in a few locations, some work on the agility equipment and some basic obedience.

Abby, Raina, and Soren with toys playing in the water

The pups got some play time with each other (very limited since they have arrived with us, you never want to raise to puppies out of the same litter togther or else you will have “dogy” issues with them being more reliant and focused on each other then you the handler) and the big dogs controlled what they needed to or participated as they saw fit!

A little back and forth bite inhibition training between puppies

A nice soft correction from an adult member of the pack, assisting in teaching the pup acceptable body language and when you have crossed the line.

All in all, a weekend that couldn’t be complained about. Busy weekends are not always bad, just pass by to quick! Hello work week!
